I just happened to stumble upon your post about New Life by Colleen Perry. It was interesting to me because I am the producer of the digital movie, Colleen Perry.

I wanted to comment on your post--- the movie I made took about 5 days working on it for 12-15 hours per day. It would be very difficult for a teacher to make this a part of her/his lessons on a regular basis.

The whole idea of learning to produce a digital story, for me, was to incorporate it into the classroom and use it as a tool to help students learn in a very deep way some content or time period. I teach social studies for 8th graders and I have done digital storytelling with them twice in the past 3 years. It is a powerful tool in the classroom when coupled with pbl (problem/project based learning). There are many skills that can be taught along the way with a "just in time" philosophy which engages students because they learn what they need to know "just in time" and tend to really pay attention to what they are being taught. The retention is also very strong as I have spoken with students who were part of my classes in the past and they still speak very highly of the experience on a variety of levels.

As far as using a digital movie for students with special needs, I think it would be difficult to create ones like New Life for the classroom. Using a mac (or a pc) you can though input a digital video of a lesson very easily and save it as a quicktime movie for students to view at a later time should they need to.
